In 1978 it was created the so called National Center of Musical Documentation and in 1985 it was integrated into the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM) of the Secretary of State for Culture cunder the name of Musical Documentation Center. In 1996 the Dance Department was added and the center changed its name to current one, depending since then on the General Sub-Department of Music and Dance.
Our main functions are to collect, systematize and spread information concerning these two art forms in Spain, which basically lies in developing databases constantly updated, and providing help to users: consultations, bibliographic queries, specialized searches, etc.
We provide professionals, specialists, researchers and users in general, access to all the Library collection: monographs, periodicals, audiovisual, sheet music, concert programs, videos, photographic archives...
We also publish-paper or digital format music and dance books and repertories.
The Center has organized several exhibitions throughout Spanish and foreign cities.
Since 2002 the Documentation Centre of Music and Dance manages the Spanish Agency of ISMN (International Standard Music Number).
The center collaborates with the most important institutions in the field of musical information and documentation as a member of MIC (Music Information Centres) and IAML (International Association of Music Libraries) whose Spanish branch, AEDOM (Spanish Association of Musical Documentation) is a founding member.
